Founded on March 9, 1978, by Charles W. Strittmatter, Strittmatter Companies has grown from a small equipment operation with two Gradalls and two backhoes into a leading full-service construction company specializing in site development, excavation, demolition, utilities, hauling, and materials supply. Built on strong customer relationships and a commitment to quality, the company’s first customer, Shirley Contracting, remains a valued partner today.

Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Strittmatter expanded its fleet, workforce, and service offerings while opening its Manassas Park headquarters and surpassing key growth milestones. During this time, second-generation leaders Rob, Mike, and John Strittmatter began their careers within the company, gaining hands-on experience that would later guide its future.

The 2000s brought significant growth, including the addition of key management positions, expansion to more than 100 employees, and strategic property acquisitions that strengthened the company’s long-term foundation. In 2009, Strittmatter Metro was established, extending operations throughout the Washington Metropolitan region. The company also completed major projects, including City Center DC, which involved moving over 500,000 cubic yards of earth, while successfully navigating major weather events and operational challenges.

Strategic diversification fueled continued growth with the launch of the Materials Division in 2017, the Demolition Division in 2019, and the Utility Division in 2024, allowing Strittmatter to provide comprehensive, turnkey construction solutions. Additional property investments, facility improvements, and workforce expansion further positioned the company for long-term success.

In 2026, Strittmatter reached a significant milestone of more than 330 employees, reflecting decades of sustained growth and investment in its people, services, and infrastructure. Today, nearly five decades after its founding, Strittmatter Companies remains a family-owned organization recognized for its commitment to safety, quality, innovation, and customer service throughout the Mid-Atlantic region.
